Senior Legislator Urges Officials to Deepen ReformTian Jiyun, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, has asked officials in Fujian Province, east China, to continue to keep an open mind and further promote the reform.He made the call during a six-day inspection tour from September 12-17 to Fujian, where he visited the cities of Xiamen, Zhangzhou and Quanzhou cities, known as the "golden-triangle" in southern Fujian. Tian held a discussion today with major provincial and city leaders, urging them to "seize opportunities to step up development." The successful story of Fujian and other parts of China has showed that the Party's reform and other related policies are absolutely correct, Tian said. In the past two decades, Fujian saw an average annual GDP growth rate of 13.8 percent; and in Xiamen, one of China's special economic zones, the figure was 18.8 percent. However, Tian noted, there is still a big gap between China and developed countries, and even greater efforts still need to be made to change that fact. He asked the officials to pay more attention to agriculture and rural areas, further promote the reform of state-owned enterprises, and continue to encourage the development of private and overseas-invested enterprises. On the corruption issue, Tian said that corruption will be removed under the leadership of the Communist Party of China with Jiang Zemin at the core. |
