Vice Premier Urges to Fight Droughts

Vice Premier Wen Jiabao has urged local governments to spare no efforts in combating the lingering droughts that have attacked many parts of the country this year.

Wen made the call during his trip to northeastern Liaoning Province which has been hit by drought, from September 16-18, to visit local villagers and State-owned grain storage areas.

During his talks with local people, he urged local governments to make sure the local people get food and drinking water and work out plans for next year's farming season.

Learning that the province has suffered heavy losses of grain and a serious shortage of drinking water due to the severe droughts, Wen told the local people to try to reduce their losses to a minimum and figure out ways to increase income.

He also presided over a forum on agriculture and rural work in Shenyang, the provincial capital of Liaoning, which was attended by leading officials from Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
