German Minister Hopes China to Join WTO Soon

German Economics and Technology Minister Werner Muller stressed Monday it is important for the current candidate for WTO membership -- China to join the organization as soon as possible.

As many countries as possible should be involved in the WTO which continues to have the important task of pushing ahead with the liberalization of world trade, he said at the opening of the two-day 8th Asia-Pacific Convention of German Business here Monday.

He said the open world trade system is increasingly becoming a buffer which can alleviate the impact of regional shocks on the world economy.

"So it is vital that the talks in Geneva on implementing the Uruguay Round results continue in a targeted fashion. In addition, the efforts to get a new WTO Round going must be intensified," he said.

He said the third ASEM summit is taking place in Seoul in October, which ought to give a strong signal for a new WTO Round.

He said ASEM adds an inter-regional dimension to the cooperation between European and Asian countries.
