Psychological Problems Affect One Third of Children in Tianjin
One out of every three children under school age in Tianjin suffer from psychological problems, which result in abnormal behavior, according to a recent questionnaire.
The result showed that over 34.3 percent of the behavior problems is the result of psychological problems.
The survey was conducted by the municipal children's health service, using 8,6786 samples from 30 kindergartens in the municipality which neighbors Beijing.
The survey indicated that 31 percent of children between 2 and 4 years of age are found to have behavior problems. Some of the behavior problems are: being over reserved, shy and timid, exhibiting aggressive behavior such as bullying, fighting and unruliness, badgered with hypochondria, feeling scared, worried and self-contemptuous.
Among children between 5 and 6 years of age, 37.3 percent are found to have abnormal psychological problems, 24 percent of them are over active, absent-minded and fidgety.
Liu Xunian, an official with the health service, said that because of being indulged by their parents, the only child in the family has less opportunity to temper himself/herself and to communicate with his/her peers. Moreover, most parents either do not care or do not know how to deal with their children's psychological problems.
Experts said that the period between 2 and 3 years of age is crucial for a child's intelligence, character, and social adaptability.
"The psychological problems, if not treated timely and effectively, will greatly damage children's health," said Liu.
