China Develops Core DVD ComponentBEIJING-- China has recently developed one of the key component for digital video disk (DVD) pick-ups,one of the core technology for DVD players and computer CD-ROMs, that will break the technology monopoly of Western companies. The breakthrough was made by a group of scientists headed by Chen Lianghui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) as part of the country's high-technology development plan Program 863. The core component China has managed to develop is a 650 nanometer semiconductor laser diode. The other two core components are lens and decoding chips. Li Yuzhang, also a CAS research fellow, said the market potential for the technology is huge in and outside China. "The demand for DVD players around the world is expected to reach 120 million, including 10 million from China, and 80 million DVD players will be used for personal computer CD-ROMs," said Li. Li, also executive vice director of the National Engineering Research Center for Optoelectronics Devices, said the researchers are planning to commercialize the technology by setting up a joint venture with a domestic company.
