Official: China Confident of Winning Four Women's Weightlifting Golds

A top Chinese sports official said Sunday in Sydney that China is confident of winning four weightlifting gold medals at the 27th Olympic Games.

Wei Di, head of the Chinese Weightlifting Training Camp, said that the Chinese women should bag four gold medals from as many events in which they will compete.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) ruled that one nation can only send at most four women to take part in the Olympic Games. "Or China could sweep all the seven gold medals at stake," Wei said.

In the women's 48kg competition, which ended Sunday afternoon, Bulgaria's Izabela Dragneva claimed the gold with a modest weight of 190kg, well outside of the world record of 197.5kg, set by China's Liu Xiuhua.

"There are at leat five athletes in China who can lift 190kg or over," Wei said.

China will compete in the four categories of 53kg, 63kg, 69kg and over 75kg.
