China's Top Legislator Continues Visit in RussiaChinese top legislator Li Peng arrived in Vladivostok Sunday to continue his official visit in Russia.Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, flew in from Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia. Vladivostok, the administrative center of Primorsky Territory, or Maritime Territory, is the last stop of Li's nine-day Russia visit. With a population of 630,000, Vladivostok is the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Russia's major Pacific seaport, and the main base of its Pacific Fleet. The city's main industries include shipbuilding, zinc and copper smelting, and the manufacture of forest products, processed food, and machinery. While in Novosibirsk, Li visited Akademgorodok, seat of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He also held meetings with Novosibirsk Governor Viktor Toloconsky as well as leaders of the local legislature. Before Novosibirsk, Li visited Moscow, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin, Federation Council (upper house of parliament) Chairman Yegor Stroyev, and State Duma (lower house) speaker Gennady Seleznyov. On Monday, Li will visit the Russian Pacific Fleet and meet with Yevgeny Nazdratenko, governor of Primorsky Territory. Vadivostok is also an important center of scientific research. The Far Eastern State University, founded in 1899, is located here. Li is scheduled to visit the university later on Monday.
