Forum on Industrialization of Advanced Ocean Technology Opens

The '2000 Forum on the Industrialization of New and Advanced Ocean Technology opened today in Rongcheng city, Shandong Province in east China.

Song Jian, vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee and President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), attended the opening ceremony.

He stressed the importance of studying, protecting and developing ocean resources, saying that developing ocean resources has become a strategic issue for China, which is facing a shortage of land resources.

According to him, China should give top priority to the development and application of modern technologies in the fields of halobios, ocean transportation, ship-building, petroleum and natural gas, tourism and fishery.

More than 20 academicians from the CAE and the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the forum jointly organized by the CAE and the Shandong provincial government.
