China Upset World Cup Champs in Women's Hockey
China pulled off the biggest upset of Olympic women's field hockey on Sunday as they clinched a 2-1 victory over the
Netherlands
, the reigning World Cup champions.
The Chinese women opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Yang Hongbing. Wang Jiuyan put the Chinese 2-0 ahead in the 30th minute.
The Netherlands pulled one goal back with 10 minutes to go.
China finished second to last in the World Cup this year when the Netherlands added the World Cup title to their European crown.
The Netherlands had beaten China three times in a row earlier this year.
China face New Zealand,
Germany
and South Africa in later group competition.
