Badminton: Women's Top Eight to Do Battle Sunday

The top eight seeds in the badminton women's singles competition are all in action for the first time Sunday on the second day's play at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

World champion Camilla Martin of Denmark faces the toughest task when she playes Ellen Angelinawaty of Indonesia in the opening match. The pair have met twice before in 1999 and have one win each.

Commonwealth champion Kelly Morgan of Britain, who struggled to beat the Indian number one Aprna Popat in three sets Saturday, should find it easier against Koon Wai Chee Louisa of China's HongKong, 29 places below Morgan in the world rankings.

Australia's Rayoni Head, who was cheered on by a large crowd to a straight sets win over Robbyn Hermitage of Canada, plays Chan Ya-Lin of Chinese Taipei. The pair have never met in a world ranking event.

The men's singles competition also begins on Sunday, but none of the seeded players is in action until Monday.

In the men's doubles, Atlanta silver medallists Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock of Malaysia will take on world champions Ha Tae-Kwon and Chung Jae Hee of South Korea. The Malaysian pair took 84 minutes in beating their Chinese counterparts Chen Qiqiu and Yu Jinhao on Saturday.
