Police Officer Detained for Obstructing Law-enforcementA police officer in north China's Shanxi Province has been prosecuted for protecting a recreational parlor and obstructing law-enforcement, the Ministry of Public Security said Friday. On July 8, Zhang Xiaoyang, a policeman in Linyi County of Shanxi Province, managed to obstruct a routine inspection on a local recreational parlor by a team of China's law-enforcement officers. Further investigation shows that Zhang had acted as the protector of the recreational parlor, which employs one of Zhang's relative. The public security bureau of Linyi County deprived Zhang of his Chinese Communist Party (CPC) membership for protecting the parlor, and detained him for 15 days for his obstruction of routine inspection. China launched a countrywide campaign against prostitution, gambling, drug abuse and trafficking on July 1, aimed at dealing with illicit activities in recreational places, such as the frequent admission of under-age people. Tong Jianming, a senior officer with the Ministry of Public Security, disclosed that Chinese police have conducted thorough inspections on more than 850,000 recreational places and revoked the licenses of some 50,000 recreational parlors since July 1. Venues that have been most closely monitored in the crackdown include dance halls, saunas and public bathing houses, video parlors, beauty salons, tea-houses, bars, Internet cafes, and hotels. The case of Zhang Xiaoyang had been made public among police officers of Linyi County. The two-week clean-up campaign was sponsored by the county's public security bureau to improve the legal awareness of police officers, Tong said.
