Media Urged to Promote Young Girls' Welfare

The media should join the efforts to help deal with the issues of living, protection and development of young girls, to create a better environment for them to grow up healthy.

Gu Xiulian, a vice-chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, made this call here today at the opening of a three-day forum on the relationship between the media and young girls, which is attended by over 130 Chinese and foreign experts.

The media can play a key role in eliminating one of the oldest Chinese traditional concepts in the mind of some people that women are born inferior to men, she said.

Girls, especially those living in rural and remote areas, face greater difficulties than boys in health care and education, she said.

Edwin Judd, representative of UNICEF China, also urged the media to play a more important role. He said a campaign on the rights of girls be launched in the coming 12 months.
