Graving of New Dunhuang Grottos Along Silk RoadConstruction of the Dunhuang Modern Grotto Art Project is shattering the silence in Dunhuang, in northwest China's Gansu Province.The project's layout was designed by Wang Dawei, dean of the Art School at Shanghai University. According to his design, the all new underground grottos will cover 100,000 square meters. The whole compound includes an entrance, a sunlight corridor, artists living quarters and areas for modern art grottos, multimedia model grottos, exhibitions and cultural exchanges. The multifunctional caves can be used as an art museum, a workshop, and an art information exchange center. The designer says internal walls and ceilings of the new grottos will display rocks in their primitive form while the floors will be polished marble. Tunnels linking the grotto gate to the underground caves are also under construction. The project was initiated by Chang Shuhong, the first director of the Dunhuang Research Institute.� Chang Shuhong suggested over forty years ago that grotto-cutting work be resumed because grotto art is the mirror of ages and the reflection of history. � (China Radio International) |
