27th Olympic Games Opens in Sydney, China 40th to Enter

The opening ceremony of the 27th Sydney Olympic Games kicked off at 7:00 pm Friday local time (4:00 pm Beijing Time) at the gigantic Stadium Australia.

More than 100,000 people attended the grand gala at the stadium and an expected 3.5 billion viewers around the world are watching the opening show on the screen.

More than 11,000 athletes from 199 countries and regions are lining up to walk into the stadium in alphabetical order. The opening ceremoney is expected to last for about four hours.

The Chinese team, with Liu Yudong, a 1.98-metre basketballer, as China's national flag bearer, will be the 40th to enter.
