Northeast China Port City's Export Booming

The city of Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning province has reported a foreign trade volume of 12.14 billion US dollars in this year's January-August period, said the city's customs officials.

This represented a 50.1 percent increase over the same 1999 period, they said.

The city's exports rose 46.4 percent to 6.58 billion US dollars in the first eight months, while its imports climbed 77.8 percent to 5.53 billion US dollars in the period.

The overseas-funded enterprises and joint-ventures in the city imported 3.45 billion US dollars, almost double the import volume of the city's state-owned enterprises.

The city's state industry exported only 3.09 billion US dollars of goods in the period, 280 million US dollars less than the figure of the overseas-funded firms and joint ventures.

Its imports of general trade reported 2.3 billion US dollars, up 65 percent over the same 1999 period, and its exports of general trade reported 3.25 billion US dollars, up 45.3 percent.
