Greater News Coverage on Environment in China

Greater news coverage has been devoted by Chinese newspapers to environment, according to a 1999 survey released by "Friends of Nature", a known civilian group embracing the cause of environment protection in China.

Altogether 47,273 environment reports had been released on 75 newspapers surveyed to show a daily average of two on every issue, statistics told. While in 1994 there was only a piece of news or report in every three days on newspapers in regard to China's environment. As things stand in China in recent years, against an average of 0.46% of news release on newspapers in regard to environment in 1995, the coverage rose three times to a ratio of 1.85% in 1999.

Last year's news reports on environment concentrated chiefly on covering environment awareness enhancement, afforestation, wildlife protection, air pollution and treatment, law making and enforcement, government's behavior, solid waste disposal, environment and health, water pollution control, as well as urban environment.

"Friends of Nature" has conducted a series of environment awareness surveys on 75 different newspapers (excluding those specializing in news releases on environment) since 1996. Launched last November, the said survey ended this September.
