China's Zhang Elected FINA Executive Member

Chinese Zhang Qiuping was elected to the executive board of the swimming's world governing body FINA in Sydney on Thursday.

Zhang, vice director of the Chinese Swimming Administration Center, said that he will represent China as well as Asia to promote the sport in China and to enhance the status of Chinese swimming in the world.

The executive board of FINA has 22 members, including three each from Asia and Africa, four each from Europe and America, one from Oceania, apart from seven other representatives.

The FINA decided in its assembly that the World Championships will be held every two years instead of four years in the odd years starting from 2000, with Fukuoka, Japan to host the 2001 Championships.
