Jiang Zemin Supports Olympic Truce in Letter to IOC President
Entrusted by the Chinese government, Yuan Weimin, president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) and minister of the State Sports General Administration, presented Chinese President Jiang Zemin's letter to Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Wednesday morning.
President Jiang said in the letter: "China has all along stood for the settlement of international disputes through peaceful means. I very much appreciate your personal and IOC's positive efforts in promoting world peace. China supported the UN General Assembly in its adoption of the resolution on the Olympic Truce, and will, as always, endorse the spirit of Olympic Truce. I sincerely hope that all the countries and regions in conflict can observe the Olympic Truce and will seek at all times to resolve international disputes through dialogue, consultation and other peaceful means, and work together for an endurable world peace."
Samaranch expressed his thanks to the Chinese government's reply to the resolution of Olympic Truce and he wished Chinese athletes the best at the Sydney Olympic Games.
IOC executive board member and honorable president of the COC He Zhenliang was present at the occasion.
