Courts Begin Hearing Xiamen Yuanhua Smuggling Case

The Yuanhua smuggling case, China's largest smuggling and corruption case, started trial Wednesday in four cities at the same time, a judicial official told AFP.

The official affirmed that the trial will be opened at least in four cities in East China's Fujian Province including Xiamen, Fuzhou, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou.

The trial will be recorded by televisions, signalling the government's resolve to eliminate corrupt officials and show the public its achievements in past two years on battling smuggling activities, which made China suffer heavy tariff losses.

Meanwhile, a Beijing Youth Daily website news said Monday that more than 10 corrupt officials are expected to be given death penalty for accepting more than 5 million yuan each (US$602,400). (Chinadaily)
