Self-Taught Graduates to Have Their Graduation Certificates Put on Line

The Office for Home Education of the Ministry of Education will place on the Internet the certificates of graduates who have passed a national examination for self-taught students.

This action has been taken for the convenience of employers who want to prove the authenticity of the educational background of self-taught students, an official from the office said Tuesday.

It will be blow to those who have been profiteering from manufacturing and selling counterfeit graduation certificates and should curb this booming underground business in many Chinese cities, including the national capital of Beijing, the official said.

In 1981, China launched a national examination system for the large number of self-taught students, and since then, over two million students have passed the exams and received certificates to prove their university-level home education.

In addition to a series of regulations that govern the examination system for self-taught students, the ministry has also developed a system to manage the certificates of these graduates.

The system will be adopted in over 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions by 2001.
