1.5 Million Shanghainese Move out of City CenterResults of a research of Shanghai's population distribution by East China Teachers' University show that about 1.5 million Shanghain residents have moved out of the city center to the outskirts over the past decade, searching for better living conditions.Their old, shabby homes have been replaced with modern skyscrapers and vast patches of greened land that ultimately improved the look of the city. A clean environment, convenient transportation and varied cultural and commercial activities were the main attractions for disillusioned urbanites. Despite that, the urban population in Shanghai continues to expand swiftly to reach 11 million, compared with eight million in 1992. The expansion in urban area and the favorable policy to attract talented people contributed to the rise in population, experts said. |
