New Arched Bridge to Stride over Huangpu River

Lupu Bridge, a new arched bridge, is going to be erected over the Huangpu River. Taking the stead of the former, which are all of derrick style, the new bridge will give people a brand-new scene when completed.

Being the 7th cross-river traffic facilities over the Huangpu River, the new bridge, starting from the intersection of Luban Rd. and Zhongshan Rd. South to join the fly-over at Jiyang Rd., extends a total of 8.7 km in length with a width of 40-50 meters between the red lines.

The arched bridge, which is supported underneath with a series of pillars co-designed by Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute and Shanghai Urban Construction Design and Research Institute carried away the bidding for the construction of the bridge in August 1999.

The bridge offers people a sense of smooth and soft curve, ample in space, and a contrast of light and shade with an integrated harmony. It is going to be a symbol architecture, which has further enhanced the China's level of bridge construction in the aspects of usability, economy, design and fieldwork and shaping as well.

Uniquely shaped, the main arch with a structure, simple and fluent yet full of changes offers a smooth, straight and broad way for vehicles to run through the arches of the bridge. The curved and straight main lines plus the changeful arched carcass supported by paralleled slim pillars set off the special feature of the spacious structure of the main span with a state-of-art sense of modern times. Apart from these, several round holes, big and small, built on the arches have enriched the dexterity of the bridge, making it look more graceful, elegant and prettier.
