Asian Packaging Center to Be Set Up in China

World Packaging Organization has approved that Asian Packaging Center be set in China, China Packaging Technology Association announced Sunday in Beijing.

The State Economic and Trade Commission has agreed on the theory that the specific location of Asian Packaging Center is set in Zhejiang Province's Wenzhou City. This is an important step for China's packaging industry to welcome China's pending accession into the World Trade Organization and to be in line with international packaging business.

According to sources, the first stage of the ¡°Asian Packaging Center Headquarter¡± project will include nine parts with a total construction area of 1.2 million square meters and an estimated total investment of RMB 3.5 billion yuan. These nine parts are: Information and Network Center of world packaging industry, meeting center, Asian Packaging Mansions, World Packaging Assembly Hall, Grand Hotel, World Trade Center, Financial Building, Education Center and Science and Technology Center. Meanwhile, the government is preparing to construct a free trade and processing zone for world packaging and an international packaging industrial park which would invite public investment internationally. Under the instruction of the state ministries and commissions concerned with overall design by China Packaging Association, World Packaging Organization and Asian Packaging Organization, the project is to be implemented by Jintai Packaging Corporation Limited which is set up jointly by China Jintai Corporation Group and packaging organizations from home and abroad.

According to experts, contemporary packaging industry is booming with a total world market share of 578.56 billion US dollars in 1999 and an estimated 600 billion US dollars in 2000. Nowadays, packaging industry of one country depends more and interact more on other countries. It is more necessary for China's packaging industry to compete and develop in the international market. Twenty years ago, the total production value of China's packaging industry was only RMB 7.2 billion yuan annually while that in 2000 is estimated to hit RMB 190 billion yuan, with an annual growth rate of 15%. China's packaging industry has now basically meet the demand of people's life and the development of domestic economy. However, problems also exist. That is, China still has to import high quality supplement raw materials as well as to introduce from abroad high-class machinery facilities and, China has not able to produce testing instrument with high precision.

Insiders believe that the establishment of Asian Packaging Center will speed up the rapid growth of China's packaging industry and enhance its capability in resisting risk. The domino offect will facilitate China to be a world packaging industry center.
