HK Entrepreneur Makes Family Planning DonationThe China Population Welfare Foundation (CPWF) Monday received a one-million-yuan donation from a Hong Kong entrepreneur who wants to be sure the country's family planning policy continues for a long time.He Luli, vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairwoman of CPWF, received the donation from Jun-chi Chan and thanked him for his contribution to China's family planning cause. The chairwoman noted that China's limited state budget can not satisfy the increasing demand of the welfare cause for the world's largest population, and charitable donations are an important source of income. "After over two decades of effort, China's family planning policy has not only gained understandings from ordinary people but also the international community at large," she said. She added that many Hong Kong businesspeople have shown their concern for the welfare operation in the mainland, which has won praise from the United Nations Population Fund. Chan said he wanted the money to go to hard-working family planning workers. The philanthropic businessman has contributed some 20 million yuan (2.4 million US dollars) to various causes on the mainland. The family planing policy has been in effect in China for 30 years, and has helped reduce the population growth by 300 million people. Since 1995, the CPWF-initiated Project Happy has combined the cause with poverty elimination efforts by bringing aid to poor families, especially those with one child. The project has spent more than 100 million yuan (12 million US dollars) helping at least 70,000 impoverished mothers in various parts of China. Some 30 million yuan (3.6 million US dollars) of the fund came from donations.
