China to Turn Weaponry Base into Holiday Village

China is planning to transform a weaponry base in the northwestern province of Shaanxi into the nation's largest holiday village with national defense as its theme.

The project is among those proposed at the fourth China Fair for International Investment and Trade, currently being held in the eastern coastal city of Xiamen, Fujian Province, and has aroused great interest among the participants, according to sources with the fair.

A total of 500 million yuan (60 million U.S. dollars) will be needed for turning the No. 051 weaponry base into a tourism base, which highlights defense technology and a variety of entertainment related to the military.

The project covers an area of 30 square kilometers and is located some 90 kilometers east of the famous tourist city of Xi'an.

The holiday village will consist of four areas, including amusement facilities, a defense education center, a hot spring inn and a base for defense technology.
