China's Top Legislator Meets Latvian President

Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga told China's top legislator Li Peng in Riga Monday that Latvia will uphold the one-China policy and wishes to expand relations with China in various areas.

Freiberga said during a meeting with Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, who is on a three-day official visit to Latvia, that Li's visit is of great importance to the development of relations between the two countries.

The Latvian people remember that China has been supportive to Latvia and understands Latvia's stand since the two established diplomatic relations nine years ago, she said.

The president stressed that Latvia will not develop any official relations with Taiwan, and instead it will stick to the one-China policy.

Li told the president that China pays great attention to relations with nations of the Baltic region, and respects the efforts by the people of those countries.

He said he is confident the relations between the two will continue to grow smoothly for a long period of time as the two sides are making joint efforts.

Freiberga suggested that China accept more Latvian students, and increase exchanges in the cultural fields.

Earlier, Li also met with Latvian Prime Minister Andris Berzins.
