Science Park to Highlight IT-related Sector

Guangzhou's Huangpu District is stepping up efforts to establish a science and technology research park to accelerate development of related industries.

The district is now going all out to develop second phase of the project..

The initial phase of the project covers 10,000 square metres, and the second phase will cover 48,000 square metres. Phase three would encompass 170,000 square metres, according to a blueprint.

Zhu Qiqian, director of the district's science and technology bureau, said Huangpu is offering tax incentives, land use policies, and residency settlement advantages to encourage investors.

The park will consist of low buildings in a natural setting. Occupants will do research and development in Internet-based logistics, new materials, software and other IT-related industries, Zhu said.

He said the district wants to open this park to capitalize on its geographic advantages.

Located in eastern Guangzhou, Huangpu District is home to Guangzhou Port, which handles more than 100 million tons of cargo annually. More than 100 domestic enterprises and 1,000 foreign-funded enterprises do business in the district.

"The geographic advantages have made it possible for Huangpu not only to witness a rapid development of its logistics industry but also to turn the Internet-based logistics industry into a pillar industry," Zhu said.

The district also must establish a modern Internet-based logistics industry to secure more investors and improve the business climate.

Zhu said efforts to develop new materials, software and other IT-related industries will help Huangpu catch up with the technology development of other districts in Guangzhou.

Statistics indicate that high and new technology industries in Huangpu District are still in an fledging stage, with the production output value of those industries accounting for 8 per cent of the district's gross industrial production output value. (Chinadaily)
