Taiwan Hit by Powerful Earthquake

A powerful earthquake registering 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked northeastern Taiwan Sep.10 afternoon.

The quake, centred near Hualien county's Hsincheng city, about 180km southeast of Taipei, shook buildings and power lines all across the region after it struck at 4.54pm.

Residents of Hualien and Ilan counties, on the northeastern part of the island, felt the strongest tremors.

No major injuries had been reported by Sep.10 night.

In Taipei, tall buildings swayed for about 20 to 30 seconds after the quake struck.
