DPRK Special Envoy Begins Visit to South Korea

A special envoy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) arrived here Monday for a four-day visit for talks to further implement the South-North Joint Declarations signed this June.

Kim Yong Sun, a special envoy of DPRK leader Kim Jong Il and one of his closest confidants, flew into Seoul directly from Pyongyang Monday morning.

Kim, who is in charge of concrete inter-Korean affairs, will meet with South Korean Unification Minister Park Jae-kyu Monday afternoon to discuss inter-Korean issues, especially the reconnection of the Seoul-Shinuiju Railroad, government officials said.

He is scheduled to attend a banquet hosted by South Korean Prime Minister Lee Han-dong Wednesday and meet with President Kim Dae-jung Thursday before he returns to the DPRK capital.

During his visit, Kim and his eight-member delegation, will visit the southern resort island of Cheju, the ancient city of Kyongju, and Pohang Iron and Steel Corporation.

The visit by Kim, who heads the DPRK Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, shows the inter-Korean relations have reached a substantive stage for harmony and cooperation, the officials said.
