Chinese President Leaves New York for HomePresident Jiang Zemin left New York on Saturday afternoon for home after participating in the three-day Millennium Summit of the United Nations, which concluded later Friday at the U.N. headquarters.During his stay in New York, President Jiang attended the Millennium Summit, the roundtable discussion, and the UN Security Council Summit, and the Summit of the five permanent members of the Security Council, the first of its kind in the 55-year history of the world body. On the sidelines of the Millennium Summit, President Jiang Zemin met with U.S. President Bill Clinton, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who heads the Group of 77, and Cuban leader Fidel Castro, and other leaders who were in New York to take part in the Millennium Summit, which was designated to discuss the UN role in the new century. President Jiang arrived here Monday for the Millennium Summit, which attracted more than 150 heads of state or government to discuss the challenges facing the United Nations in the 21st century. |
