Tele-Conference on STD Prevention Held

A tele-conference was held Saturday in Beijing on the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Two thousand people attended the conference in twenty cities around China, including Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Xi'an and Lanzhou.

An official from the Department of Disease Control in the Ministry of Health (MOH) said the conference, jointly sponsored by MOH and the National Center for STDs and Leprosy Control, aims to help carry out the "Recommended Plan of Regulated Prevention and Treatment of STDs" issued by MOH last month.

The ministry and Roche Pharmaceuticals in Shanghai announced a joint project on the prevention and treatment of STDs in March.

According to the project, Roche will provide one million yuan annually during the 2000-2002 period to help China train medical professionals for STDs treatment, conduct health education seminars among patients, set up model clinics, and sponsor international and domestic academic exchanges.

Reported STDs cases hit eight million people last year, with an annual increase rate of 40 percent, said the official.

Experts pointed out that the "Recommended Plan of Regulated Prevention and Treatment of STDs" will meet the needs of medical professionals and help supervise the treatment of STDs.
