Hong Kong, China Pins Olympic Gold Hope on Windsurfer Lee
Hong Kong, China is pinning its hope of Olympic gold medal on windsurfer Lee Lai-shan during the Millennium Olympics to be opened on Friday.
Lee, who won the first-ever Olympic medal for Hong Kong, China in 1996 when she triumphed in the women's mistral class, is back to defend her title as the Sydney Games may be her last after racing for more than 10 years.
"She is preparing well and right now she is terribly focused on this," said Con Conway, deputy chef de mission, "She is a protected species and is here to do a job."
Besides, Fenella Ng, the flagbearer of Hong Kong, China, could also do well in the women's single sculls, said the official.
"We have high hopes for Fenella Ng. She was a swimmer in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and is now a sculler. We are very proud of Fenella."
Ng finished second in the Asian Games in 1998.
Conway said Hong Kong, China also had high expectations for cyclist Wong Kam-po in the men's 40 km points race and Song Ah-sim in the women's table tennis.
