Western Areas Base Development on High Technology

The development of China's Western region is expected to be largely based on the high-tech and information sectors, Sunday's Business Weekly of Chinadaily reported.

"It was an ideal time for the western regions to leapfrog ahead and develop the new technologies in a decade or two," said Qi Jiangguo, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He said that the construction of industrial infrastructure in advance is necessary. But the government should pay more attention to setting up education and technology centers and improving various information facilities.

"Sparing no efforts to make the best use of the talented people we will also create a sound and favorable climate for the introduction of overseas capital and the expected influx of more talented people," Qi added.

He said that the new economy based on the service industry is key to the present consideration about future economic development in western China.
