Nearly 2,000 Contracts Shelved by US, Britain: Iraq

The United States and British delegates at the United Nations Sanctions Committee have put on hold a total of 1,966 contracts Iraq signed with foreign countries under the UN oil-for-food program, Iraqi Trade Ministry said on Saturday.

The contracts, including 886 for the oil sector, 219 for health, 284 for electricity, 103 for transport and communication, were concluded between Iraq and Arab, European and other countries.

Iraq says that the sanctions have claimed over 1.3 million lives, causing a humanitarian crisis in the country.
