Estonia Reiterates Adherence to One-China Policy

Estonian President Lennart Meri told China's top legislator Li Peng Saturday in Tallinn that Estonia will always observe the one-China policy and that policy will remain unchanged in the future.

In an hour-long talks with Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), who is on a three-day official visit to Estonia, Meri noted that Estonia will only develop non-official relations with Taiwan.

The Estonian president said that his country only recognize the People's Republic of China as the solely legitimate government representing the whole Chinese people. And Estonia will only have economic and trade relations with Taiwan, he added.

Li thanked the president for Estonia's stance on the Taiwan issue. He said that is the biggest support for China, and fully demonstrates the spirit of "mutual trust and mutual respect" between China and Estonia.

In addition, Li said China understands and respects the Estonia 's decision to develop closer relations with other European nations.

Li also said that China hopes Estonia could play a greater role in regional and international affairs.

Meri said he is looking forward to visit China again. The president, who visited China in 1994, traveled to Shenzhen Special Economic Zone during that trip and planted a tree of friendship there.

He said Estonia and China should expand their exchanges and Estonia welcomes more visitors from China. In particular, he expressed the hope that there would be more Chinese enterprises, technology and products coming to Estonia.
