Symposium Held to Promote Development in West China

A symposium was held Saturday in Beijing to promote development in western region and ensure a rapid, sustainable and healthy economic growth in China in the 21st century.

The symposium was sponsored by the National School of Administration and the Seeking Truth magazine, China's leading ideological journal.

Participants of the symposium including leaders from related departments under the State Council and a number of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities shared the opinion that new thoughts and new systems must be examined in developing China's western regions.

They emphasized that there should be restructuring and further reforms of economic system, and a modern enterprise system should be set up in State-owned enterprises.

The construction of infrastructure will be further developed. The investment environment in the western region should be improved to attract domestic and overseas capital and talent, participants stressed.

They pointed out that west China should strengthen science and education development and encourage well-educated personnel to work in the region.

The participants were also concerned with sustainable development and protection of the fragile ecological system in the western region.
