Investigation into Three Gorges Tragedy Begins

Chinese commodities inspection authorities and technical experts from the US Rotec Co., the supplier of the tower belt machine that killed three workers, Saturday began tests on the accident at the Three Gorges Project.

Together with the Rotec technicians, the Chinese experts will analyze the base material, the solder, and other equipment to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Around 6:50 pm on September 3, workers from Gezhouba Company Group were still working at the flood discharge section of the gigantic water control dam when the No. 3 tower belt machine broke from a height of 19.6 meters and collapsed, throwing down 29 workers who were working on the belt. Four other workers that were working under the tower were injured.

The US company sent its representative Barry Crouchman to join the investigation team.

Authoritative sources said Gezhouba Group Company has banned the use of other tower belt machines and roof belt machines. Concrete pouring at the flood discharge section has been put on hold.
