Jiang Watches Chinese Traditional Concert in New York

Chinese President Jiang Zemin watched a Chinese traditional concert at the Lincoln Center on Friday night.

Bathed in autumn wind, the Lincoln Center looked more graceful than ever the night. As Jiang walked into the concert hall and to his box, the audience gave him long and warm applause.

The concert, which was presented by China National Traditional Orchestra, started with a melodious Chinese traditional musical piece "Good News." The 80-member orchestra then played eight other classical Chinese traditional works, such as "Butterfly Lovers" and "The Moonlit Spring River and Flowers," and several western musical pieces including "America the Beautiful" and "Aloha."

After the concert was over, two baskets of fresh flowers were presented to stage in the name of Jiang. Both players and the audience of more than 1,200 people stood up, waving their hands to Jiang, who arrived here on September 4 to attend the Millennium Summit held in the United Nations headquarters.

The concert was part of the 25-day Chinese Culture Exchange Tour in the United States beginning on August 24.

Both Jiang and his U.S. counterpart, Bill Clinton, sent letters of congratulations to the culture tour.
