Beijing Rules on Busiest Walking StreetThrowing gum on the sidewalk, dogs, as well as other activities will not be allowed in Wangfujing walking street, the busiest commercial street in Beijing, starting next month.According to a set of rules concerning the management of Wangfujing walking street issued by Beijing Municipal Government Friday, people who spit, litter, or throw away chewing gum on the street will be fined 50 yuan (six U.S. dollars) after cleaning up the mess themselves. Dogs and other animals are forbidden from strolling on the street. Begging, fortune telling, gambling, or sleeping in the open are also banned. Unauthorized posting of literature like ads or those passing out handbills will be fined 200 yuan and are responsible for cleaning up the site. The rules also stipulate on other activities as well. The rules will go into effect October 1, 2000. Beijing renovated Wangfujing Street, located in the central downtown area east of Tian'anmen Square, last year. An average of 300,000 customers a day were reported to have visited the commercial district since the renovation was completed in September, 1999. The ongoing second phase of the renovation will expand the street to the north, east and west.
