Submarine Cables to Be Laid to Connect HK, Japan

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Government announced Friday that submarine cables will be laid off Lantau Island to provide telecommunication services by connecting Hong Kong and Japan with onward connection to North America via other trans-Pacific cable systems.

One fiber optic submarine cable and one earth cable which measure 50 and 30 millimeters in diameter respectively, and an associated earth plate will be laid along 9.22 hectares of the foreshore and sea-bed off Tong Fuk.

Related works are scheduled to start in September 2000 and complete by January 2001, the government said.

Hong Kong owns a world-class telecommunications infrastructure directly linked with eight submarine cable network systems, connecting Hong Kong with Asia, North America, Oceania and Europe.
