Chinese Youth Sets Record on Climbing Mount Taishan

A Chinese youth Thursday set the record on this year's competition of climbing Mount Tai in east China's Shandong Province.

Zhang Xinkai, a native of the mountain area, spent 57 minutes and 50 seconds in the 9-kilometer-long climbing course, including 6,600 stone steps, from the foot to the peak of the 1,545-meter-high mountain.

More than 700 people from China, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Canada and other countries attended the climbing competition, an international event hosted every year since 1987.

The event's male record is 57 minutes and 47 seconds and the female record is 67 minutes and 31 seconds.

Mount Tai, the highest peak in eastern China, is on the world natural and cultural heritage list.
