China Urged to Curb Spread of AIDs

Alarmed at the fact that AIDs is spreading at a fast pace in China, top government advisors today called for redoubled efforts in curbing the fatal disease and promoting greater public awareness.

At a meeting of the Counselors Office of the State Council, these advisors also urged the media to play a larger role in spreading the knowledge on the threat of the deadly disease.

Furthermore, a special law on the prevention of AIDs/HIV should be issued to make clear the duties of the government and different social groups in combating AIDs.

According to the Ministry of Health, the first AIDs patient was detected in 1981, and now the total number of AIDs patients and HIV carriers reached 34.3 million worldwide.

In China, AIDs infections have been reported in all the provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, with the official figure standing at 18,000. Sixty percent of the victims are aged between 18-39 years.

Local experts have demanded crackdown on prostitution and drug addiction and trafficking as people involved in the illegal trades are vulnerable to the deadly virus.
