Tibet Reaps High-Yield Barley HarvestTibet Autonomous region is to reap a bumper harvest in high-yield highland barley this year.Highland barley, also known as Qingke, is the principal food grain in southwest China's Tibet. The region sows highland barley on 120,000 hectares of land each year, accounting for 60 percent of the total farmland in Tibet. On average, each hectare of land produces 3,750 kg of grain. To raise its output, the regional academy of agricultural science experimented with growing high-yield Qingke strains on 666 ha of land in Nyima County. In cooperation with local farmers, the agricultural scientists cultivated the crop using the latest technology and careful field management. According to a recent sample survey, the per hectare output of the new strain was more than 7,900 kg. Lin Dawu, president of the local academy of agricultural science said the strain will soon be common in Tibet. |
