Vice-Premier Urges Restructure of Research Bodies

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing has urged research bodies to restructure themselves to release the power of advanced science and technology.

During an inspection tour to southwest China's Sichuan Province earlier this week, the vice-premier also called on research institutes of applied sciences to turn into modern companies for further development.

The research bodies must enhance their economic and technological strengths by participating in fierce competition in the market, said Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee.

Between September 3 and 7, the vice-premier visited research institutes, universities and enterprises in Mianyang and Chengdu cities.

Li praised Mianyang for its efforts to primarily shape several electronic, nuclear and aerospace bases, which have made a great contribution to the local economy in recent years.

Meanwhile, Li ordered local officials to give full support to research bodies and high-tech enterprises, providing them with strategic development guidance and services.

The local government must create an environment suitable for carrying out scientific research and conducive to attracting high-level professionals, Li stressed.

In addition, Li urged colleges and universities to train more talented people for further scientific advancement and economic growth in the economically-backward province.

On the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Sichuan must also pay attention to protect the environment for sustained development during China's drive to develop its western regions, he said.
