State Councilor Says Coming Decade Crucial for China

The coming five to ten years will be an important period of economic and social development for China, said State Councilor Wu Yi today in Xiamen, east China's coastal province of Fujian.

She made the remark in a speech titled "An Open China with Brilliant Future" at the Fourth China Fair for International Investment and Trade.

"We are to simultaneously embark on the retracking of economic system, restructuring of the economy and the transformation of economic growth modes, which will further improve the relationship between demand and supply, economic structure and institutional pattern," said Wu.

The two-decade reform, opening-up and rapid development has enabled China to consolidate its comprehensive national strength. People's life has improved considerably, its international status has been on the rise and it has reached the strategic objectives set by the first and second step of modernization drive, she said.

Wu pointed out that China's economic development will be highlighted in several aspects. The strategic adjustment of economic structure will be accelerated, she said.

She said China will work hard to accelerate the informationization of its national economy and society and bring the industrial structure and quality to a new level. The country will also make headway in urbanization, change existing structure of the city and countryside and bridge the gap between them.

Moreover, the strategy of Developing West China will be implemented while the advantages of China's eastern regions will be given to play as before so that the eastern, central and western regions can five impetus to one another and develop in a coordinated manner, she said.

By deepening reform, State-owned enterprises will set up modern corporate system, enforce stockholding system and participate in market competition as real players who are responsible for their own management decisions, profits and losses.

The effort, she said, will fortify the status of public ownership as the mainstay.

The strategy of Rejuvenating the Nation through Science and Education will be further implemented, she said. Science, technology and education will make greater progress and following reform in these aspects, integrate closely with economic construction.

To go with the trend of scientific and technological development of today's world, she said China will accelerate the establishment of State Scientific and Technological Innovation System to increase the capability of making scientific and technological innovations and turn the scientific achievements into practical productivity.

Wu noted China will also nurture professionals in various sectors, improve the quality of labor force and actively create incentive mechanism and social environment that helps excellent talents find way to distinction.
