On the early morning of September 1, while typhoon Maria attacked Guangdong from the juncture between Shanwei and Huizhou, both in Guangdong Province, "Tongli" Ship, a 30,000-dwt cargo liner belonging to Xinyou Shipping Co. Ltd of Taiwan, lost control in the offshore areas near Shanwei. After being informed of the accident, the Guangzhou Rescue and Salvage Bureau sent three tug boats and one engineering ship to add to the rescue effort. The ship was able to be retrieved four hours after the tide set in, late at night on September 5. In the small hours of September 6, the grounded Taiwan ship was eventually dragged into the deep sea areas where it set sail. The Taiwan ship reached Shantou Port for minor repairs Thursday afternoon.
