Chinese Newspapers Keen on Environmental Protection Reports

Chinese newspapers cover more articles on environmental protection than before, according to a survey released today by a non-governmental environmental organization "Friends of Nature."

The organization surveyed 75 newspapers, which published 47,000 pieces of news stories on the environment in 1999, or two such stories in one newspapers each day, compared with one story every two days in 1994.

The newspapers devoted a large space to problems on wildlife protection and air and water pollution last year. However, three years ago, more environmental reporting was about tree planting, sanitation and government-advocated environmental campaigns.

"Friends of Nature" started in 1994 to conduct the annual survey and evaluation.

Volunteers with the organization said that newspapers play an important role in improving public awareness on environmental protection.
