Foreign Trade Minister Meets US Visitor

Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng met with famous US economist Lawrence Klein Thursday in Xiamen, and they exchanged views on China's economic development.

Shi and Klein are in this special economic zone for the Fourth China Investment and Trade Fair, the only national activity aiming to lure direct overseas funds, schedule from September 8-12.

Shi said since its reform and opening up some 20 years ago, China has witnessed rapid economic growth, improvement of its economic structure, and upgrading of product quality.

The Chinese government welcomes foreign investors, especially to invest in its high and new technology sector, encouraging them to participate in the regrouping and reconstruction of State-owned enterprises, and also welcomes foreign small and medium-sized enterprises to actively participate in China's economic development.

Klein highly appreciated China's role in helping overcome the Asian financial crisis. He expressed the hope that China would enter the WTO as early as possible, thus becoming a member of the world trade family.

China's entry is beneficial to itself and the whole world as well, and its market will be more attractive to foreign investors, he said.
