Chinese President Meets Italian Prime Minister

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato at the United Nations headquarters here Thursday and exchanged views on bilateral relations and international issues.

Both leaders said that they are delighted to meet each other again during the United Nations Millennium Summit being held in New York from September 6 to 8.

Jiang said that China and Italy enjoy a very good relationship and their cooperation has been smooth in political, economic, cultural and technological fields.

He said that China attaches great importance to developing long-term and stable friendly relations and cooperation with Italy.

Jiang expressed his belief that through the joint efforts of both sides, the Sino-Italian relationship will be further promoted in the new century.

Amato expressed Italy's wish to further strengthen cooperation with China in all fields.

He also expressed his admiration for the important role China has played in international and regional affairs, hoping that the role will be further enhanced.
