Zhongshan University, in this capital south China's Guangdong Province, has set up a campus in Zhuhai city in the same province.

Some 4,200 freshmen started their first university semester today at the campus in Zhuhai, one of the country's earliest special economic zones, said a local education official.

Established by Zhongshan University and the Zhuhai city government, the campus is a new approach in university education in China, the official said.

The 76-year old Zhongshan University has thus become the country's first institute of higher education with campuses in different cities, he said.

The Zhuhai government gave 3.4 square kilometers of land for the facility, along with 100 million yuan in funding for a classroom building and teaching equipment.

Zhongshan University will also spend large sum of investment for its Zhuhai campus, which will create a college for oceanic studies, tourism management and research centers.

So far, a 776,000-square-meters classroom building with 179 classrooms has been set up on the campus. Other education and living facilities such as library, a dormitory, a dining hall and a service center have also been built.
